Rhys Horseshoe Vineyard Chardonnay 2018

Rhys Horseshoe Vineyard Chardonnay 2018 is a striking, world-class expression of California Chardonnay, built with the kind of precision and energy that has made Rhys one of the most admired names in cool-climate wine. Grown in the Santa Cruz Mountains from a blend of Wente, Hyde, and Mt Eden clones, it combines intensity, mineral drive, and remarkable finesse. In a region better known for bold, sun-kissed styles, this wine stands out for its elegance and site-driven character.

Makuprofiili
The wine pours with a bright, polished golden hue, hinting at its concentration and purity. On the nose, it is wonderfully expressive, opening with lemon, pineapple, mandarin oil, and white flowers, before unfolding into notes of gunpowder, crushed stone, and flint. The palate is focused and concentrated, yet beautifully balanced, with vibrant acidity carrying the wine through a layered, textured middle. Citrus peel, salty minerality, and a long, stony finish give it impressive length and poise. This is a Chardonnay with serious aging potential; Jeb Dunnuck suggests 2–3 years in bottle and enjoyment through 2032.

Viininvalmistus
Horseshoe Vineyard sits high in the Santa Cruz Mountains at around 500 meters above sea level, where the cool climate and well-situated slopes provide ideal conditions for Chardonnay. The grapes come from three distinct clones—Wente, Hyde, and Mt Eden—adding complexity and nuance to the final blend. Harvest is carried out entirely by hand, and fermentation takes place in oak barrels before the wine is matured for six months in stainless steel, preserving freshness and detail while keeping the wine focused and refined.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This Chardonnay is a superb match for dishes that can complement its acidity and mineral edge, such as roast chicken, lobster, grilled scallops, creamy risotto, or simply prepared seafood with lemon and herbs. Serve it well chilled, ideally around 10–12°C. Decanting is not necessary, though giving it a little time in the glass will help the aromatic layers open beautifully.
