Rhys Horseshoe Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018 is a serious, site-driven Pinot Noir from the cool Santa Cruz Mountains, showing just how powerful and expressive California Pinot can be when terroir is truly the focus. Crafted by Jeff Brinkman from a vineyard shaped by marine influence and old Monterey soils, it combines richness, precision, and depth in a style that feels both generous and finely detailed. This is one of those wines that immediately signals pedigree, while also carrying the kind of structure that has made Rhys a benchmark producer in California.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, the wine shows a deep, concentrated Pinot Noir profile with a dark, brooding character. The nose is layered with black cherry, ripe raspberry, licorice, leather, smoke, herbs, and spice, underpinned by a mineral edge that adds freshness and complexity. On the palate, it is broad, supple, and beautifully textured, with silky tannins and impressive depth. The fruit is ripe but not heavy, supported by savory notes and a long, resonant finish. While already impressive now, the wine has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully over the next decade, gaining even more nuance with time.

Viininvalmistus
Horseshoe Vineyard benefits from the cool temperatures of the nearby Pacific Ocean, creating ideal conditions for Pinot Noir in one of California’s most distinctive growing regions. The vineyard’s diatomaceous Monterey soils, estimated to be 11 to 15 million years old, contribute to the wine’s breadth, texture, and mineral complexity. For this bottling, all clusters are fully destemmed, and after fermentation and pressing the wine matures for 18 months in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with roast duck, grilled quail, mushroom dishes, herb-crusted lamb, or rich salmon preparations. It also works well with earthy vegetarian plates featuring truffle, wild mushrooms, or lentils. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for about 30–60 minutes is recommended if enjoyed young to help open up the wine’s aromatics and texture.
