Rhys Mt Pajaro Vineyard Pinot Noir 2017

Rhys Mt. Pajaro Vineyard Pinot Noir 2017 is a striking first-release from a small parcel in one of Santa Cruz Mountains’ more southerly, and slightly warmer, vineyard sites. Crafted by winemaker Jeff Brinkman, it combines impressive intensity with the elegance and detail that have made Rhys Vineyards a benchmark for California Pinot Noir.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, this Pinot Noir shows a deep, alluring color that hints at its concentration. The nose is vivid and expressive, with layers of raspberry, wild blackberry, dried orange peel, cinnamon, pipe tobacco, and dried spices. The palate is beautifully textured and expansive, with dark fruit taking center stage and impressive depth throughout. Notes of dark cherry, menthol, and licorice carry through a long, persistent finish. This is a wine with the structure and balance to develop further in bottle over the coming years.

Viininvalmistus
The Mt. Pajaro Vineyard parcel sits in the southern part of the Santa Cruz Mountains, where the warmer conditions help shape a more powerful expression of Pinot Noir than Rhys’s northern estate sites. Jeff Brinkman includes 13% whole clusters in the ferment, then matures the wine for 18 months in French oak barrels, including 23% new oak, giving the wine added complexity and polish without overwhelming the fruit.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with roasted duck, mushroom risotto, game birds, pork tenderloin, or grilled salmon. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider a short decant if opening young to help the aromatics unfold.
