Rippon Mature Vine Pinot Noir 2017 is a striking expression of Central Otago, made from old vines planted in the 1970s and shaped by one of New Zealand’s most celebrated Pinot Noir sites. With winemaker Nick Mills’ Burgundian training and Rippon’s exceptional lakeside terroir, this is a wine that combines purity, depth, and unmistakable character. It’s a serious Pinot Noir built for patience and rewarding long aging.

In the glass, this Pinot Noir shows a deep, concentrated ruby hue, hinting at its intensity and age-worthy structure. The nose is layered and beautifully complex, with dark cherries, plums, blueberries, violets, pencil shavings, black tea, licorice, pepper, and subtle oak. The palate mirrors the dark fruit aromas, adding notes of Asian spice, dried meat, and earthy nuance that give the wine both richness and savoury depth. It’s precise, powerful, and elegantly structured, with the kind of concentration that suggests excellent aging potential. If opened young, it will benefit from plenty of air to fully раскры its complexity.

Rippon’s vines grow on the shores of Lake Wanaka in Central Otago, where the cool continental climate, strong sunlight, and well-drained soils create near-ideal conditions for Pinot Noir. The mature vines, planted in the 1970s, have deep root systems that help draw complexity and minerality from the site. The wine is crafted with a focus on preserving the vineyard’s natural expression and structure, resulting in a Pinot Noir of notable depth and longevity.

This is a superb match for roasted duck, game birds, lamb, mushroom dishes, or richer preparations with Asian spice. It also works beautifully with earthy, umami-driven dishes and aged cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and consider decanting if drinking it young to allow the aromas and structure to खुल fully.
