Shafer Vineyards Hillside Select 2016 is one of Napa Valley’s most celebrated Cabernet Sauvignons and a true benchmark for the region. Made entirely from hillside fruit selected from 14 small parcels around the estate, it has earned legendary status for its intensity, depth, and remarkable consistency—one of the wines that helped define Shafer’s name on the world stage.

In the glass, Hillside Select shows a deep, almost opaque ruby-purple core, hinting at its concentration and power. The nose is lavish and layered, with dark plum, blackcurrant tart, cassis, anise, nutmeg, and rose petals, all wrapped in subtle new oak spice. The palate is equally commanding, unfolding with black plum and blueberry at the fore, followed by pomegranate, licorice, crushed stone, tobacco, sage, and a touch of smoke. Despite its richness, the wine carries impressive precision and freshness, and its finish seems to go on endlessly. While it is already spectacular in large glasses now, it has the structure and pedigree to age gracefully for at least another 20 years.

Hillside Select is sourced from 14 small hillside parcels at Shafer Vineyards in Napa Valley, where the rocky slopes and elevated exposure naturally limit yields and produce highly concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2016 vintage was aged for 32 months in 100% new French oak barrels under the direction of winemaker Elias Fernandez, a regimen that adds polish, spice, and structure to the wine’s powerful fruit profile.

Best enjoyed with equally bold dishes such as dry-aged ribeye, braised short ribs, venison, or truffle-rich mushroom dishes. Serve at 16–18°C and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours to allow the wine’s full aromatic complexity and layers of flavor to open up.
