Vieux Château Certan 1998

Vieux Château Certan 1998 is a beautifully mature Bordeaux from one of Pomerol’s most respected estates, offering the depth, complexity and silky texture that collectors look for in top-right-bank wines. Despite the label information highlighting Cabernet Franc, this vintage is notably dominated by Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, resulting in a richly layered wine with remarkable concentration and elegance. With its low yields and classic Pomerol pedigree, it stands as a superb example of the estate’s refined, age-worthy style.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby to ruby-purple hue, still vibrant for its age. The nose is expressive and nuanced, with aromas of blackberry, cassis, cherry, cedar, spice box, licorice and a subtle pencil-lead character that adds classic Bordeaux finesse. On the palate, the wine is concentrated, silky and multi-layered, combining ripe dark fruit with notes of plum, spice, bitter chocolate and fine oak. The tannins are polished but still provide structure, while the acidity brings freshness and lift. This is a wine with excellent aging potential in the cellar, and in its mature window it should continue to evolve gracefully, gaining more savory complexity over time.

The estate is known for very low yields and careful harvesting only at full ripeness, which in 1998 resulted in exceptionally concentrated fruit. Vinification follows a traditional Bordeaux approach, with an emphasis on preserving purity, structure and the natural complexity of the vintage.

This is an ideal match for refined dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, truffle risotto or mushroom-based recipes. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16-18°C and consider decanting for about 1-2 hours if opening now, especially to allow its mature aromas to fully unfold.

Vieux Château Certan is one of Pomerol’s historic estates, with roots tracing back to the original Sertan property before it was divided into several famous holdings. The Thienpont family has guided the estate for generations, and Alexandre Thienpont is widely credited with elevating its quality after taking over in 1962. Today, the château is regarded as one of the benchmark producers of the appellation, admired for wines that combine depth, elegance and outstanding longevity.
