Vieux Château Certan 2016

Vieux Château Certan is one of Pomerol’s most respected estates, known for wines that combine refinement, depth, and remarkable longevity. This 2000 vintage shows the classic balance of the property’s Merlot-led style, lifted by Cabernet Franc, with an elegance that has made the château a benchmark in Bordeaux.

In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby to purple core, beginning to soften at the rim with age. The bouquet is layered and inviting, offering cedar, blackcurrant, blackberry, melted licorice, caramel, and mocha, all unfolding with increasing complexity as it opens. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, pure, and elegant, with a concentrated core of dark fruit framed by low acidity and firm, polished tannins. The finish is long and structured, suggesting excellent aging potential; while already expressive, this is a wine that can continue to evolve beautifully for many years in cellar.

Viininvalmistus
Vieux Château Certan lies in the heart of Pomerol, on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, where gravel, clay, and iron-rich soils help create wines of power and finesse. The estate’s vineyards total around 14 hectares, with some older vines dating back to 1932, and are planted primarily to Merlot, supported by Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon. Under the Thienpont family, yields have been kept deliberately low and harvesting is carried out only at optimal ripeness, allowing the fruit to fully express the character of the terroir.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is a natural match for roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, game birds, truffle dishes, and rich mushroom-based recipes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting is recommended, especially for younger bottles or when opening the wine before it has fully integrated in bottle; a generous decant will help reveal its aromatic complexity and soften the tannins.

Originally part of the larger Sertan estate, Vieux Château Certan became a separate property as holdings in the area were divided over time. The Thienpont family has long been associated with the estate, and Alexandre Thienpont took over leadership in 1962, marking a major turning point in quality through lower yields and stricter ripeness standards. Today, the château stands among the great names of Pomerol and is widely admired for producing wines of elegance, precision, and exceptional ageing potential.
