Vieux Château Certan 2019

Vieux Château Certan 2019 is a benchmark Pomerol, showing the depth, perfume, and finesse that have made this estate one of Bordeaux’s great names. Crafted from old vines on a beautifully varied terroir and shaped by the Thienpont family’s careful, restrained approach, it is a wine of remarkable balance and intensity. Its historical significance runs deep, tracing back to the old Sertan estate that was later divided into some of Pomerol’s most respected properties.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, the wine is deep and luminous, with a richly colored core that hints at its concentration. The bouquet is intensely expressive, opening with cassis, black cherries, violets, loamy earth, sweet spice, and a subtle incense note that adds complexity and lift. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet seamless, with a fleshy heart of vibrant fruit, fresh acidity, and ripe, powdery tannins that give the wine both structure and polish. The finish is long, resonant, and beautifully perfumed. This is a wine with excellent aging potential and should continue to gain complexity over many years in bottle.

Viininvalmistus
Vieux Château Certan comes from a 14-hectare estate in Pomerol, split into around 23 parcels with a distinctive mix of gravel, clay-gravel, and clay soils that bring nuance and depth to the blend. The vineyard is planted mainly to Merlot, with a significant proportion of Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon. Grapes are harvested with precision at optimal ripeness, followed by classical maceration and élevage for 18 months in about 65% new oak, helping to refine the texture while preserving the character of the terroir.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This wine pairs beautifully with elegant dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, truffle-infused pasta, or game bird with earthy sauces. It also works well with mushroom-based dishes and mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended if drinking young to allow the aromatics and structure to fully open.

Vieux Château Certan is one of the most esteemed estates in Pomerol, now in the hands of the Thienpont family. Alexandre Thienpont transformed the domaine after taking over in 1962 and later in 1986, bringing a meticulous, vineyard-focused philosophy that significantly elevated the estate’s reputation. Today, with Guillaume Thienpont working alongside him, the property is recognized for producing some of the most refined and complete wines in Bordeaux, including one of the standout wines of the exceptional 2019 vintage.
