Walter Scott’s Freedom Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir 2022 is a striking expression of one of Oregon’s most celebrated sites, crafted by Ken Pahlow with a deep respect for the vineyard’s history. The wine combines dark fruit intensity with lifted floral and earthy nuances, shaped by partial whole-cluster fermentation and a generous touch of new French oak for added structure and complexity. Freedom Hill itself has long held legendary status in Oregon, first planted in 1981 by Dan and Helen Dusschee and prized for its ability to produce wines with both energy and depth.

In the glass, this Pinot Noir shows a deep, vivid color that hints at its richness and concentration. Aromas of black and red cherries, rose petals, smoke, forest floor, and spice rise quickly from the glass, creating an inviting and layered bouquet. The palate is juicy and dark-fruited, with blackberry and raspberry leading into earthy undertones and notes of black tea. There is a compelling sense of length and intensity here, with the flavors unfolding steadily and lingering well beyond the finish. While already expressive, the wine has the structure and depth to reward cellaring for several years.

For the 2022 vintage, 15% whole clusters were included in fermentation, and the wine was aged with 35% new oak to build texture and aromatic complexity.

This Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with roasted duck, grilled salmon, mushroom dishes, pork tenderloin, or earthy preparations featuring wild rice, herbs, and root vegetables. Serve slightly cool, ideally around 14–16°C, to let the fruit, spice, and savory notes show at their best. Decanting for 20–30 minutes can help open the wine, especially if enjoyed young.
