Les Forts de Latour is the second wine of Château Latour, one of Pauillac’s most iconic estates, and this 1990 double magnum comes from an exceptional vintage. Far from being a simple “junior” bottling, it captures the depth, structure, and aristocratic character associated with Latour, while offering a more approachable and expressive style than the grand vin. First created in 1966, Les Forts de Latour has become a benchmark second wine in Bordeaux, especially in outstanding years like 1990.
Makuprofiili
In the glass, the wine is likely to show a mature garnet hue with softened ruby edges, reflecting its age and format. The nose should be layered and refined, with notes of cassis, black cherry, cedar, tobacco, graphite, and dried herbs, alongside earthy hints, leather, and subtle spice.
On the palate, the 1990 vintage is known for its round, generous, and surprisingly concentrated character, with the richness that Robert Parker praised in this wine. The tannins should now be resolved and polished, while the structure remains very much in place, giving the wine balance, length, and classic Pauillac gravitas. Thanks to the double magnum format, it has benefited from slower, more graceful maturation and can still offer remarkable drinking, though it is now at or near peak maturity.
Viininvalmistus
Les Forts de Latour is sourced from Château Latour’s Pauillac vineyards, where deep gravel and clay soils topped with rounded stones create ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. The estate’s terroir benefits from excellent drainage and the thermal retention of the stones, helping the grapes ripen evenly in Bordeaux’s maritime climate. In 1990, more than half of the fruit that could have gone into the grand vin was instead allocated to Les Forts de Latour, explaining the unusual depth and quality of this release. The estate has since moved toward more environmentally conscious viticulture, but in this vintage the focus was firmly on careful selection and traditional Bordeaux vinification to preserve concentration, structure, and balance.
Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is a wine for classic, savory dishes: roasted lamb, beef ribeye, venison, duck breast, or slow-braised short ribs are all excellent matches. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses or earthy mushroom dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and if opening now, decant gently for 30–60 minutes to help the wine unfurl and separate from any sediment.

Château Latour is one of the most legendary estates in Bordeaux, with origins dating back to the 14th century, when the original tower gave the property its name. Located in Pauillac and ranked as a Premier Cru Classé in the 1855 classification, it is regarded as one of the greatest wine estates in the world. Since 1993, it has been owned by François Pinault, and in recent years the domaine has gained recognition for its shift toward organic farming, with the entire vineyard certified organic from 2015. Château Latour remains a reference point for power, precision, and longevity in fine Bordeaux.
