Château Margaux 1996 in magnum is a superb expression of one of Bordeaux’s most iconic First Growths, combining precision, elegance, and remarkable longevity. In the glass, the wine shows a deep, still-vibrant ruby colour with the kind of clarity and poise expected from great Bordeaux at maturity. The bouquet opens slowly, revealing blackberries, blueberry, crushed stone, violets, and a subtle floral lift, followed by hints of spice and vanillin oak. On the palate, the 1996 Château Margaux is all about balance and finesse. The tannins are finely woven, the acidity remains fresh and vibrant, and the fruit is wrapped in a cool, mineral drive that gives the wine extraordinary definition. It is powerful without ever feeling heavy, with a long, controlled finish and excellent ageing potential; in magnum format, it is especially well suited to extended cellaring.

Château Margaux’s vineyards sit on exceptional gravelly soils in the Margaux appellation, where drainage and sun exposure help Cabernet Sauvignon reach full aromatic and structural potential. The estate works with old vines and careful vineyard management to preserve concentration and complexity, with grapes harvested at optimal ripeness and selected rigorously before vinification. The final blend reflects the classic Left Bank style, with Cabernet Sauvignon leading the wine and Merlot and Cabernet Franc adding depth and fragrance.

This is a wine for refined dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, game birds, or truffle-infused preparations, as well as mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours if opened now, especially to allow the wine’s aromas to fully unfold.
