Château Montrose 2003 in magnum is a rare opportunity to experience one of Saint-Estèphe’s most celebrated classified growths in a format that enhances both longevity and elegance. Powerful, concentrated, and built on a core of Cabernet Sauvignon, this vintage combines the estate’s signature structure with the added refinement that has made Montrose a benchmark for serious Bordeaux collectors. Rooted in a historic estate that dates back to the late 18th century, it remains one of the most sought-after wines from the Médoc.
Makuprofiili
Deep and dark in the glass, this 2003 shows the unmistakable intensity associated with Château Montrose. The nose is layered with blackberry, cassis, graphite, roasted herbs, tobacco, and subtle touches of spice, all framed by a sense of restraint and precision rather than overt richness.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with firm, sturdy tannins and remarkable depth. Ripe black fruit is carried by earthy, mineral notes and a classic Saint-Estèphe austerity that gives the wine definition and length. While already impressive, this is a wine with considerable aging potential, especially in magnum, where its structure and balance should allow it to evolve gracefully for many more years.
Viininvalmistus
Château Montrose’s vineyard is a single, continuous 95-hectare estate surrounding the château and its outbuildings, a rare and highly prized layout that has remained largely unchanged since the 1855 classification. The soils are ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon: warm, gravelly, and well-drained, with clay subsoils that help retain moisture during dry periods. The vineyard is planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and the fruit for the grand vin is selected through strict sorting at every stage. The wine is then matured for 18 months in French oak barrels, around 60% of them new, to refine the tannins and add complexity without overpowering the fruit.
Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is an excellent wine for richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, braised short ribs, venison, or duck with a dark sauce. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses and earthy mushroom-based dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C and, given its structure and maturity, decanting for one to two hours is recommended to allow the wine to open fully and express its aromatic depth.
Tuottaja
Château Montrose was established in the late 18th century after being separated from Château Calon-Ségur, and it earned its place among Bordeaux’s elite with the 1855 classification as a Second Growth. Located in Saint-Estèphe, the estate is known for producing wines of power, precision, and remarkable staying power. Over the years, Montrose has built a reputation as one of the great names of the Médoc, admired by critics and collectors alike for its consistency, depth, and aging potential.
