Château Mouton Rothschild 1998 - magnum

Château Mouton Rothschild 1998 in magnum is a striking example of why this legendary Pauillac estate sits at the very top of Bordeaux. Immensely precise, richly structured and built for the long haul, it combines immense concentration with the refinement that has made Mouton one of the most sought-after wines in the world.

In the glass, the wine shows a deep garnet-brick hue, hinting at both maturity and power. The nose is beautifully layered, opening with crème de cassis, dried roses and ripe dark fruit, then unfolding into hoisin, baking spice, dried cherries, mulberries, wood smoke, incense and forest floor. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied with a dense core of fruit framed by firm, chewy tannins. The texture is polished yet commanding, with complex tertiary notes already emerging while the fruit still remains very much alive. This is a wine with excellent aging potential, and in magnum it should continue to develop gracefully for decades.

Viininvalmistus
Château Mouton Rothschild is based on the Plateau de Mouton in Pauillac, on the Médoc’s gravelly soils where vines must struggle deeply for water and nutrients, helping to produce wines of great structure and longevity. The vineyard is densely planted and planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot completing the blend. Fruit is harvested and selected with great precision, and vinification is managed by an expert team focused on preserving the estate’s trademark depth, fragrance and age-worthy tannin structure.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
Best served with equally impressive dishes such as roast lamb, beef fillet, venison, duck breast, truffle-based dishes or mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for approximately three hours to allow the wine to fully open and show its aromatic complexity. A magnum format is especially rewarding here, offering a slower evolution and greater finesse in the glass.

He pioneered château bottling, built the estate’s famous cellars, and introduced the now-celebrated tradition of commissioning artists for the label. Elevated to Premier Cru Classé status in 1973, Mouton remains one of the most admired estates in Bordeaux, now carried forward by the next generations of the Rothschild family.
