Known for its restraint, complexity, and remarkable ageing potential, this is a wine that reflects both the historic character of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the house’s commitment to classic winemaking.

In the glass, this wine typically shows a deep garnet to ruby colour, with the magnum format helping preserve freshness and elegance over time. The nose is layered and refined, offering ripe red and dark fruit, dried herbs, garrigue, spice, and subtle earthy notes that continue to unfold with air. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet balanced, with Grenache bringing generous fruit, silky texture, and warming depth, supported by savoury complexity and a long, graceful finish. Clos des Papes is known for wines that can be enjoyed when released, but the 2000 vintage in magnum is especially well suited to long cellaring and should continue to evolve beautifully for years, gaining nuance and harmony.

Viininvalmistus
Clos des Papes works with low yields of around 12–15 hl/ha, which contributes to the concentration and intensity of the wines. The vineyards in Châteauneuf-du-Pape benefit from the region’s warm Mediterranean climate and diverse terroir, while the estate’s farming has been organic and biodynamic for nearly two decades and certified organic since 2011. Vinification remains highly traditional, with no use of new oak; ageing takes place in large old foudres and cement tanks to preserve purity, balance, and the authentic character of the appellation.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, game, duck, beef stews, and richly flavoured Mediterranean dishes such as herb-roasted vegetables, ratatouille, or slow-cooked lamb with garlic and rosemary. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting is recommended, especially if opening now, to allow the wine to fully reveal its aromatic complexity and layered structure.

Clos des Papes is one of the great historic producers of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with a family history dating back to 1896, when wine was first sold under its own label. Paul Avril played an important role in the creation of the appellation, and today his grandson Paul-Vincent Avril continues the family legacy with great success. The estate is widely respected as one of the region’s reference points for traditional, age-worthy Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and Robert Parker has famously described it as one of the benchmark estates for the style.
