Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2011 Magnum is a benchmark expression from one of the most respected estates in the Southern Rhône. Made from Grenache and Mourvèdre in a traditional style, this magnum format offers excellent cellaring potential and a graceful way to enjoy a classic, age-worthy Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Clos des Papes has been closely tied to the history of the appellation since the late 19th century, and that legacy still shows in every bottle.

In the glass, this wine typically shows a deep ruby to garnet color, with the kind of concentration that comes naturally from low yields and old-vine fruit. The nose is layered and expressive, moving from ripe red and dark berries to dried herbs, spice, garrigue, and earthy nuances, often with a subtle floral lift. On the palate, it is rich yet composed, with generous Grenache-driven fruit, Mourvèdre’s structure and depth, and a long, savory finish. The texture is supple but firmly anchored by fine tannins and fresh acidity, giving the wine the balance to develop beautifully over time. In a magnum, the 2011 vintage should age especially well, gaining complexity over many years.

Viininvalmistus
The grapes come from Clos des Papes’ carefully tended vineyards in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where the Southern Rhône terroir of stony soils, warm sunshine, and cooling influences helps ripen fruit fully while preserving freshness. Yields are kept very low, around 12–15 hl/ha, which concentrates both flavor and structure. Harvesting is carried out with a traditional approach, followed by vinification that reflects the estate’s philosophy of restraint and precision. Aging takes place in large old foudres and cement tanks rather than new oak, allowing the wine’s character and terroir to remain at the forefront.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is an excellent wine for rich, savory dishes such as roast lamb, game, beef stew, duck, or slow-cooked Mediterranean fare with herbs and olives. It also pairs well with aged hard cheeses and dishes featuring mushrooms or truffles. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking young, especially in magnum, to allow the wine to open fully.

Clos des Papes is one of the great reference producers of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with a history dating back to the 19th century when the estate was already bottling under its own label in 1896. Paul Avril was instrumental in shaping the appellation, and today his grandson Paul-Vincent Avril continues the family tradition with the same dedication to quality and authenticity. The estate has practiced organic and biodynamic viticulture for nearly two decades and has been certified organic since 2011. It is widely admired for producing some of the region’s most traditional and age-worthy wines.
