Clos des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape 2014

Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2014 is a benchmark red from one of the appellation’s most respected estates. Crafted in a traditional style with Grenache and Mourvèdre at its core, it offers depth, structure and remarkable ageing potential, while reflecting the history and character of one of Rhône’s most iconic villages.

In the glass, this wine typically shows a deep garnet colour with youthful ruby reflections. The nose is layered and expressive, with dark berries, ripe cherries, wild herbs, spice, leather and a subtle earthy complexity that unfolds with air. On the palate it is generous yet poised, combining concentrated fruit with firm tannins, freshness and a long, savoury finish. The style is classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape: powerful but balanced, with the structure to age beautifully. While it can be enjoyed on release, it will often reach greater harmony after 5–8 years in bottle and can continue evolving beyond that.

Viininvalmistus
Clos des Papes comes from Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s distinctive terroir of galets roulés, clay and sand, which helps retain heat and support full ripening. Yields are kept very low, around 12–15 hl/ha, ensuring concentration and precision in the final wine. Harvesting is carried out with a traditional mindset, and vinification remains deliberately classic, with ageing in large old foudres and cement tanks rather than new oak, allowing the fruit and terroir to remain at the forefront.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, game birds, beef stew, duck confit, grilled ribs or hearty Mediterranean dishes with herbs and olives. Serve at around 16–18°C. Decanting for one to two hours is recommended when young, especially if you want to soften the tannins and open up the aromatics.

Clos des Papes is one of the great historic names of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The estate was already selling wine under its own label in 1896, and founder Paul Avril played an active role in the creation of the appellation. Today, the wines are made by his grandson, Paul-Vincent Avril, who has continued the family’s commitment to traditional, age-worthy wines. The estate has been farmed organically and biodynamically for nearly 20 years and has been certified organic since 2011. Robert Parker has described Clos des Papes as “one of the reference point estates for traditional, age-worthy Châteauneuf du Pape.”
