Clos des Papes is one of the benchmark estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, known for producing wines of remarkable depth, balance, and longevity. The 2017 vintage in double magnum format offers a particularly attractive way to enjoy a classic Grenache-led Rhône wine, with the larger bottle size helping preserve freshness and extending its aging potential.

Makuprofiili
The wine typically shows a deep ruby to garnet color, with the concentration and intensity expected from a top Châteauneuf-du-Pape. On the nose, it is generous and layered, offering ripe red and black berries, Provençal herbs, spice, and subtle earthy notes, while the palate is broad, structured, and finely textured, with Grenache bringing warmth, silkiness, and impressive fruit purity. Despite its immediate charm, this is a wine built for the cellar. With time, the fruit integrates beautifully with the savory, mineral side of the wine, gaining complexity and harmony over 5 to 8 years or more, especially in a double magnum format that slows maturation.

Viininvalmistus
Clos des Papes works with very low yields, around 12–15 hl/ha, and follows a traditional approach that favors balance over extraction. The vines are farmed biodynamically and organically, with certification in place since 2011, and the winemaking avoids new oak entirely; aging takes place in large, old foudres and cement tanks to preserve the wine’s purity and the character of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This wine is a natural match for roasted lamb, game, beef with herbs, duck, or rich Mediterranean dishes such as ratatouille and Provençal stew. Serve it at around 16–18°C, and decanting is recommended if drinking young, though longer-aged bottles may only need a gentle aeration.

Paul Avril played an important role in the creation of the appellation, and today his grandson, Paul-Vincent Avril, continues the family legacy with a singular focus on quality. The estate is widely respected as one of the region’s great traditional producers, and Robert Parker has called it “one of the reference point estates for traditional, age-worthy Châteauneuf du Pape.”
