Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2018 in double magnum format is a benchmark expression of traditional Southern Rhône winemaking. Coming from one of the appellation’s most respected estates, it combines old-school restraint, depth, and remarkable ageing potential, with a style shaped more by terroir than by oak or flashy extraction. The estate has been closely linked to the history of Châteauneuf-du-Pape since the late 19th century, making this a wine with both pedigree and provenance.
Makuprofiili
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby to garnet colour, with the concentration and brightness expected from a great Grenache-based Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The nose is layered and expressive, offering ripe red and black cherries, raspberry, garrigue herbs, pepper, and subtle notes of dried flowers, earth, and spice.
The palate is generous yet finely balanced, with supple tannins, juicy fruit, and a savoury, mineral edge that gives the wine real structure. Rather than relying on oak sweetness, it delivers purity, precision, and length, finishing with warmth and finesse. While approachable with some bottle age, it has excellent ageing potential and can develop beautifully over 10–20 years, especially in a large-format bottle like this double magnum.
Viininvalmistus
The vineyards are farmed with very low yields, typically around 12–15 hl/ha, allowing for high concentration and natural intensity. Clos des Papes works in a traditional and respectful way, with biodynamic and organic practices in place for nearly two decades and full organic certification since 2011. Vinification remains classic for the region, with no use of new oak; instead, the wine is aged in large, older foudres and cement tanks to preserve freshness, purity, and the character of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir.
Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is a wine that shines with slow-cooked lamb, roast game, beef stew, duck, or rich Mediterranean dishes such as Provençal vegetables, ratatouille, and herb-crusted meats. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking young; older bottles may only need a gentle splash decant to remove sediment.

Clos des Papes is one of the great reference estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with a history that dates back to the late 1800s, when the family was already bottling under its own label. Paul Avril, an influential figure in the creation of the appellation, helped shape the region’s identity, and today his grandson Paul-Vincent Avril continues that legacy with a steadfast commitment to tradition. The estate is widely admired for producing one of the benchmark wines of the Rhône, earning praise from critics such as Robert Parker as one of the reference points for traditional, age-worthy Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
