In the glass, the wine shows a deep, dark ruby core with a youthful intensity that hints at its long life ahead. The nose is layered and expressive, opening with blackberry, dark plum, black tea, black pepper, and fresh Mediterranean herbs such as rosemary and thyme. With air, more complex notes emerge, including leather and sandalwood, adding depth and a distinctly savory Southern Rhône character. The palate is powerful yet finely tuned, with concentrated dark fruit, clove, white pepper, and a repeating herbal thread that mirrors the aromatics. It has both muscle and precision, with impressive balance, a dense texture, and the kind of persistence that promises years of development. While it already shows plenty of appeal, this is a wine built for the long haul and should continue improving over the next 5 years, with top-level aging potential for 20 to 25 years or more.

This wine comes from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where the warm, sun-drenched terroir of rolled stones, clay, and limestone helps create ripe, structured reds with impressive concentration. Domaine du Pegau follows a traditional approach: whole clusters are pressed, fermentation takes place in cement vats without added yeast, and the wine is then matured for two years in used oak barrels. This hands-off, classic vinification preserves the purity of the fruit while building complexity and structure over time.

Best served with hearty dishes such as braised lamb, slow-roasted beef, game, or rich stews, as well as herb-driven Mediterranean cuisine. Serve at around 16–18°C for the best balance of fruit, spice, and freshness. Decanting is highly recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the wine’s layered aromatics and full depth to open up.
