Hartford Highwire Zinfandel 2018

Hartford Highwire Zinfandel 2018 is a striking example of old-vine California Zinfandel, sourced from the historic Highwire Vineyard with more than 100-year-old vines. The vineyard’s tightly trained “high wire” trellising gives the fruit extra sun exposure, helping produce a wine with remarkable depth, concentration, and balance. With its bold personality and long legacy, this is a top-tier Zin that truly delivers in the glass.

Makuprofiili
Deep, dark ruby in appearance, this Zinfandel opens with an expressive bouquet of black cherries, blueberry compote, leather, spice, tobacco, cedar, and a cool hint of menthol. On the palate, it is layered and richly textured, showing blueberry, cherry, tea, licorice, rose petals, and black pepper, all carried by impressive intensity without feeling heavy. Despite its nearly 16% alcohol, the wine remains remarkably poised, with the fruit and structure in fine harmony. Aged for only nine months in French oak, half of it new, it has plenty of immediate appeal, but the concentration and structure suggest it can also age gracefully for several years.

Viininvalmistus
Highwire Vineyard is a historic site in California, planted with very old Zinfandel vines trained on wires and pruned more tightly than usual to encourage better sun exposure and ripening. The grapes are harvested from these mature vines, which naturally yield small, concentrated berries. Hartford’s winemaking approach is minimalist: the wine was aged for nine months in French oak barrels, 50% of them new, and Jeff Stewart avoids fining and filtration to preserve the wine’s texture, depth, and character.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is an excellent match for grilled and roasted meats, especially beef short ribs, lamb, barbecue, and game, as well as richly seasoned dishes and hard aged cheeses. Serve it slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C, to keep the fruit and structure in balance. Decanting for about one hour is recommended, especially if opening relatively young, to allow the aromatics and layers to fully emerge.
