Kumeu River Hunting Hill Chardonnay 2024 is a compelling expression of one of the estate’s most prized vineyards, combining precision, power, and remarkable purity. Sourced from the elevated Hunting Hill site in Auckland, this Chardonnay stands out for its mineral drive, concentration, and serious cellaring potential, making it one of Kumeu River’s most distinctive wines.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, the wine shows a poised, youthful intensity, with a restrained aromatic profile that hints at its depth to come. Notes of lemon, lime, white flowers, and wet stone slowly emerge, reflecting both the cool maritime climate and the vineyard’s mineral-rich soils. On the palate, the 2024 Hunting Hill Chardonnay is layered and focused, with salted citrus, stony minerality, and subtle exotic spice such as fennel and star anise. A gentle thread of vanilla and creamy texture from barrel aging adds roundness without overshadowing the wine’s tension and clarity. This is a Chardonnay built for the cellar and is expected to reveal its full complexity after around 7–8 years of bottle age.

Viininvalmistus
Hunting Hill Vineyard sits above Maté’s Vineyard on a southwest-facing slope, allowing for excellent sun exposure while benefiting from cool coastal breezes. The site’s heavy clay soils over sandstone, with iron pan beneath, help shape the wine’s pronounced mineral character, while Auckland’s maritime climate encourages slow, even ripening. The grapes were hand-harvested, whole-bunch pressed for finesse, and fermented with native yeast in French oak barrels. The wine then underwent 100% malolactic fermentation and matured in barrel for approximately 11 months to build texture and depth.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with shellfish, richer seafood dishes, creamy pasta, risotto, and roasted or grilled chicken. It also has the structure to complement more complex dishes with sauce or subtle spice. Serve chilled at around 10–12°C, and while decanting is not essential, a brief aeration may help open the wine in its youth.
