Kumeu River Mate's Vineyard Chardonnay 2023

Kumeu River Mate's Vineyard Chardonnay 2023 is the most structured of the producer’s three single-vineyard Chardonnays, with the longest ageing potential and a style that often draws comparisons to top-tier Puligny-Montrachet. Despite a more challenging 2023 vintage, it still delivers remarkable concentration, finesse, and depth—at a fraction of the cost of its Burgundian lookalike.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, this Chardonnay shows a refined, polished presence rather than overt power. The nose opens with ripe peach, nectarine, and citrus blossom, followed by a gentle touch of honey, vanilla, and lightly toasted oak from mature barrels. The palate is layered and balanced, with juicy stone fruit, pear, and a subtle creamy texture supported by fresh, vibrant acidity. A delicate nutty note, fine mineral tension, and a clean streak of lemon carry through the long finish, where a hint of buttery character adds elegance rather than weight. This is a Chardonnay built for both immediate pleasure and cellar time, with the structure to develop beautifully over the next 10 years.

Viininvalmistus
Mate's Vineyard is a 33-year-old site in Auckland, named after Maté Brajkovich, father of winemaker Michael Brajkovich, and first planted in 1990. In 2023, lower yields meant no new oak was used; instead, vinification relied on a high proportion of 1- and 2-year-old barrels, preserving the wine’s purity while still giving it its signature subtle barrel complexity.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
Serve this Chardonnay at 10-12°C to show its precision and depth. It pairs beautifully with roasted chicken, lobster, creamy seafood dishes, grilled scallops, or rich mushroom pasta; decanting is not necessary, though a little air in the glass can help reveal its layered aromas.
