Opus One 2003

Opus One 2003 is one of Napa Valley’s most iconic Bordeaux-style red wines, created from a collaboration between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. Built around Cabernet Sauvignon with supporting Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, it combines California richness with Old World structure and finesse. First launched in the early 1980s, Opus One quickly became a cult wine and remains a benchmark for premium Napa Valley Cabernet blends.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, Opus One 2003 shows a deep, concentrated ruby color with impressive density. The nose opens with layers of crème de cassis, cedar, spice box, and subtle notes of white chocolate, with a Bordeaux-like complexity that reflects its French-inspired style. On the palate, it is full-bodied and richly textured, with ripe dark fruit, firm tannins, and a distinct sense of power balanced by elegance. The finish is long and structured, showing the kind of depth that allows this wine to age beautifully for many years, particularly as the tannins soften and the aromatic profile becomes more complex.

Viininvalmistus
The grapes for Opus One come from select parcels in Napa Valley, a region particularly well suited to Bordeaux varieties thanks to its warm days, cool nights, and diverse soils. The fruit is hand-harvested and carefully sorted both in the vineyard and again in the cellar after destemming. Fermentation includes around 18 days of skin contact, followed by approximately 18 months of aging in new French oak barrels, and the wine is traditionally fined with fresh egg whites before bottling.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
Best enjoyed with premium dishes such as grilled ribeye, lamb rack, braised short ribs, or truffle-infused mushroom dishes. Serve at 16–18°C for the best expression of its aromatic depth and structure. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially in its younger years, to help the wine open up and soften its tannins.
