Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello 2014

Ridge Monte Bello is one of California’s most iconic red wines, and this 2014 release is a particularly special one: it was only brought out of the cellar in 2024 after an extra decade of careful aging. Built in a classic Bordeaux style from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, it combines depth, structure and remarkable elegance in a way that has made Monte Bello a benchmark wine since the first vintage in 1962.

Makuprofiili
In the glass, the wine shows a deep, dark ruby color that already hints at its concentration. The bouquet is layered and expressive, with ripe plum, blackberry, espresso, black truffle, anise, crushed stone and well-integrated oak aromas unfolding over time. On the palate, it is powerful and full-bodied yet beautifully balanced, with dark fruit at the core and savory, earthy details adding complexity. The wine feels refined rather than forceful, with an understated 13.7% alcohol that supports its precision and poise. Although still youthful in character, it has the structure and pedigree for long aging, and will continue to develop beautifully over the coming years.

Viininvalmistus
Monte Bello Vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains offers a distinctive high-altitude terroir that has long been associated with freshness, structure and aromatic complexity. This release is a Bordeaux blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot and Cabernet Franc contributing depth and nuance. Winemaker Eric Baugher aged the wine for 17 months in 100% new, air-dried oak barrels, a choice that adds polish, spice and a subtle frame without overwhelming the fruit.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is an excellent wine for refined dishes with plenty of flavor, such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, game, mushroom risotto or aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C. Decanting is recommended, especially if opening now, to allow the wine’s layers of fruit, earth and oak to fully open.
