In the glass, Monte Bello 2016 shows deep, dark color with impressive concentration. The nose is layered and expressive, offering blackcurrant, dark cherry, cassis, graphite, cedar, tobacco, and subtle earthy spice, with floral and mineral accents adding complexity. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and intensely flavored, yet never feels heavy. Rich dark fruit is framed by firm, polished tannins and vibrant acidity, giving the wine a sense of lift and harmony. The finish is long and persistent, marked by savory notes and a clean mineral edge. While already compelling, this is a wine built for aging and should develop beautifully over the next 10 to 20 years, gaining further nuance and softness with time.

Monte Bello comes from the high-elevation vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where cool coastal influence, rocky soils, and significant day-to-night temperature shifts help preserve freshness and structure in the grapes. The 2016 growing season was hot and dry, with naturally low yields, which led to small, concentrated berries and powerful fruit character. Ridge is known for harvesting only when the fruit reaches the right balance of phenolic ripeness and acidity, an approach that is especially important in warm vintages. Vinification is carried out with a focus on transparency and site expression, allowing the Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot blend to reflect both the character of the vintage and the identity of Monte Bello.

This is an excellent match for richly flavored dishes such as ribeye steak, lamb chops, roast beef, braised short ribs, or game meats. It also pairs well with hard aged cheeses and savory dishes with herbs or mushroom elements. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking young to help the wine open up and show its full aromatic range.
