Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello 2021

Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello is one of California’s most celebrated Cabernet-based wines, and a benchmark for elegance, structure, and longevity. First released in 1962, it draws on fruit from the historic Monte Bello Vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where vines were already being cultivated as far back as 1886.

In the glass, Monte Bello 2021 shows a deep dark ruby color that hints at its concentration and youthful intensity. The nose is layered and captivating, with aromas of ripe plums, blackberries, espresso, black truffle, anise, crushed stone, and finely integrated oak. On the palate, the wine is powerful and full-bodied, yet shaped by remarkable balance and finesse rather than sheer weight. The dark fruit core is supported by savory complexity and fresh mountain-driven structure, giving it both immediate appeal and clear aging potential. While still very young, it already shows the depth and class that suggest decades of development ahead.

Viininvalmistus
Monte Bello comes from vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains, a cool, high-elevation California terroir known for producing Cabernet blends with freshness, precision, and natural acidity. The grapes are carefully harvested and selected, then the wine is matured for 17 months in 100% new, air-dried oak barrels, a choice that adds polish, spice, and structure without overwhelming the fruit.

This is a wine that shines with richly flavored dishes such as grilled ribeye, roast lamb, venison, or beef tenderloin, as well as truffle-inflected mushroom dishes. Serve at around 16-18°C, and consider decanting for a couple of hours if drinking young to help open up its aromatics and soften the tannins.
