Sine Qua Non Grenache Dark Blossom 2011

Sine Qua Non’s 2011 Grenache Dark Blossom is a highly sought-after California red that showcases the producer’s signature Rhône-inspired style at its most compelling. Built around Grenache with supporting Syrah, Mourvèdre, and a touch of Roussanne, it offers perfume, depth, and precision in a way that has made SQN one of the most coveted names in American wine. In a vintage where many wines were challenged, this bottling stood out as one of the strongest Grenache-based blends of the year.

In the glass, Dark Blossom is deeply colored and strikingly aromatic, opening with black raspberry, cassis, dried flowers, white pepper, and licorice. The bouquet is layered and expressive, with a floral lift that adds elegance to the wine’s darker fruit profile. On the palate, it is full-bodied, seamless, and richly textured, showing generous fruit wrapped in fine tannins and balanced structure. The wine is already hard to resist for its immediacy and complexity, but it also has the backbone for short-term cellaring and should continue to evolve beautifully over the next several years.

Sine Qua Non is based in Ventura County, just north of Los Angeles, with most of its vineyards in Santa Barbara County, where warm California sunshine helps ripen Rhône varieties to full expression. This wine is a blend of 75% Grenache, 12.5% Syrah, 11.5% Mourvèdre, and a splash of Roussanne, with 11% whole clusters used in fermentation to add aromatic lift and structure. The result is a wine that reflects both the region’s sun-drenched intensity and the winery’s meticulous, hands-on approach to vinification.

Ruoka & tarjoilu
This is an excellent match for grilled lamb, roasted duck, braised short ribs, venison, or richly seasoned Mediterranean dishes with herbs, olives, and slow-cooked vegetables. Serve at around 16–18°C for the best balance of perfume and structure, and decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended if opening it young.

Sine Qua Non, founded by Austrian-born winemaker Manfred Krankl and his wife Elaine, began in 1994 with just three barrels of Syrah and has since grown into one of California’s most famous cult wineries. Its early acclaim, including a 95-point review from Robert Parker for the first release, helped establish SQN as a benchmark producer for powerful yet expressive California reds.
