Ridge Vineyards Lytton Springs 2016 Magnum is a classic California field-blend style wine that shows just how much character a carefully assembled mix of grape varieties can bring to Zinfandel. First made in 1972, it has become one of Ridge’s most admired wines for its balance, depth, and consistency, with the 2016 vintage built around Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignan, and Mourvèdre.

Expect a deep, dark ruby wine with generous color and plenty of presence in the glass. The nose typically offers ripe blackberry, plum, and black cherry, layered with spice, dried herbs, pepper, and subtle savory notes from the supporting varieties. On the palate, Lytton Springs 2016 is known for rich fruit, firm structure, and impressive harmony, with Zinfandel’s generosity lifted by the grip and complexity of Petite Sirah and the freshness of Carignan and Mourvèdre. It should drink well now, but the concentration and balance suggest further aging potential over the next several years, especially in magnum format.

Lytton Springs draws on old vines and Ridge’s long-standing approach to blending varieties to express the site rather than forcing a single grape to do all the work. The final blend for 2016 was 69% Zinfandel, 23% Petite Sirah, 6% Carignan, and 2% Mourvèdre, chosen to reflect the vintage and highlight the wine’s best qualities. Ridge is known for minimal intervention winemaking and for adjusting the blend each year according to the character of the harvest.

This is a great match for grilled lamb, barbecue ribs, roast pork, braised short ribs, or hearty dishes with mushrooms and herbs. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider a short decant if opening young; a magnum may also benefit from a little extra time in the glass to fully open up.
